Time to Wake Up

by on Sep.24, 2010, under Civil Justice, Environment, Fund Raising, Politics

As an American, it is easy to sleep walk through catastrophic events, rapacious corporate behavior, and an election cycle. Only the most personal set of circumstances really holds our attention and causes us to act. I (GV!) am speaking in general terms, of course, but reality shows us this is what we are doing – sleeping.

Oh, we may post about the ways of the world every now and again. And we may sign a petition or two along the way. Or we may have a political tit for tat over our tea, or over our coffee (wholly dependent on which way we swing in 2010).

But what are we really doing?

Zzzzzz.

It is time to wake up.

Wars must be challenged. Peace must be achieved. Paradigm shifts must be designed and implemented to deal with climate reality. Candidates with resolve must be elected. Systems must be overwhelmed. Corporations must be stopped.

But our current state of sleep doesn’t get us there.

At GVC, we are trying to give you ways to engage; ways to get beyond the sips of coffee and tea; ways to do more than simply share ludicrous news via Facebook; ways to do more than sign your name.

We want you to do all those things, and more. The world needs you to do more.

And we want to be your alarm clock.

In the next few days, we are going to share two more candidate endorsements. We already have two spectacular ones for you: Dan La Botz and Rick Staggenborg. Dan and Rick are running campaigns that can reshape the pecking order – but only with our collective support. Each of the candidates we endorse represents the ability for profound change in the United States, and

Free & Equal

Free & Equal

nationwide assistance for all of them will help drive the human agenda we share beyond November. The campaigns need your money and your time in order to be successful. Please give any amount you can afford to Rick and Dan, no matter how small. Strength in numbers.

We can further rock the system and galvanize through reform by sharing and supporting the tools being developed by Free & Equal. Take the energy you have for the election cycle and spend some of it with Free & Equal. It is a force.

Nestle is showing no remorse for its action in Colorado on the Arkansas River;  now they are preparing to raid the Cascades in Oregon. We at GVC, Food and Water Watch, Chaffee Citizens for Sustainability and a sporadic few are doing our best to stop the corporate control of water, but we need you. We need massive amounts of people to donate

Buena Vista, Colorado

towards a legal fight, boycott Nestle products, and refuse to buy any bottled water. Together, we can set a precedent in Oregon or Colorado and finally realize water is a resource for all.

Can you rise up for the next seven generations and recognize climate change for what it is? Karyn Strickler of Climate Challenge TV, Cory Morningstar of Canadians for Action on Climate Change, Climate SOS, and every citizen of the Earth present and to come need us to do so. We must collectively overcome our slumber and challenge the comfortable systems we have in place. Hand in hand, we stand a chance.

War is constantly on the American agenda. Peace is not. But it should be, when the citizenry demands it in perpetuity. We need feet on the ground through mass mobilization. We need to hold aggressive but non-violent protests with civil disobedience, not social gatherings with end times convenient for dinner plans. Who better to learn from, and take to the streets with, than Cindy Sheehan and Peace of the Action? You can also push for an end to war in electoral fashion at Voters for Peace.

Are you on Twitter? Our friend and web guru Addy Cameron-Huff created a simple way to donate using it. If you’d like to quickly donate to any of our projects, sign on to Twitter and type: $10 TweetDonate to @gregorytruman. You can enter any amount you like. For more information on Addy’s cool new tool, go to TweetDonate.org.

Finally, we leave you with a simple song of inspiration. Rise up and take the power back. They will not control us. We will be victorous.

Onward.
